About motorcycle number plates
A bike plate shows the registration on two lines – MT21 BKE becomes MT21 on top and BKE underneath. Motorcycles first registered from 1 September 2001 carry a rear plate only, in black characters on a yellow reflective background.
The characters are smaller than a car's – 64mm tall and 44mm wide, with 10mm between characters and 13mm between the lines – but the font is the same, and they can't be squashed or moved closer together to fit a smaller plate.
Sizes
- 9 × 7" (229 × 178mm) – the standard bike plate, fits every current registration at full size.
- Shaped – cut to the shortest legal outline for your registration, for a tidier tail.
- 7 × 5" and 6 × 4" – compact show plates, too small for full-size characters on the road.
2D or 4D?
Choose crisp printed characters or 4D laser-cut acrylic for real depth. 4D is road legal on a bike as long as the characters are solid black, the right size and in the right font – see are 4D plates legal?

Motorcycle plate FAQs
Are your motorcycle plates road legal?
Yes – our 9 × 7" and shaped plates use the legal two-line layout with 64mm Charles Wright characters, the British Standard mark and our supplier details. 7 × 5" and 6 × 4" plates are too small for full-size characters, so they're show plates.
What size is a UK motorcycle number plate?
The standard size is 9 × 7" (229 × 178mm), which fits every current registration at full size. A shaped plate is cut to the shortest legal outline for your registration.
Can I have 4D motorcycle plates?
Yes – choose printed (2D) or 4D laser-cut acrylic characters. 4D is road legal on a bike when the characters are solid black, the right size and in the right font.
Do I need documents for a motorcycle plate?
For a road-legal plate, yes: your V5C (or other proof of entitlement) and photo ID, which you upload after ordering. Show plates don't need documents.
